A man accused of killing a Florida priest in Georgia has pleaded guilty after reaching a deal with prosecutors to spare him the death penalty.
Thirty-year-old Steven Murray faced charges including murder in the April 2016 shooting death of the Rev. Rene Robert. Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney Natalie Paine said Murray pleaded guilty Wednesday and was sentenced to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Murray called The Associated Press from prison last week to talk about the plea deal, saying, “It’s a lot of time, but I deserve it. Father Rene was a good man.”
Murray was a repeat offender Robert had been trying to help. Police said Murray asked the 71-year-old for a ride in Jacksonville, Florida, then kidnapped him and killed him in Georgia.
